My Art 2 and Advanced Art classes were comprised of all girls this year, so it seemed to be a good time to revisit the Art Nouveau theme. Students were introduced to a variety of art and artwork of the period and from there they decided on a project that was somehow influenced by the work they'd viewed and researched. In addition to the art production part of the unit, they were required to write a brief paper that included information about their favorite artists of the period and a reflective section that talked about their project.
A field trip to the Art Deco & Art Nouveau collection at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia provided real-life inspiration, and a field trip to Maymont is planned for later in the school year. At Maymont, students will tour a beautiful, opulent 19th century mansion that has Tiffany windows, furniture and artwork from this time period.
