Illuminated Letters

Using images from The Book of Kells as their primary source of inspiration, students created their own "illuminations."

They cut out their first or last initial from a piece of 4x4 inch posterboard.

They glued their initial to a 6x6 inch piece of matboard.

They covered the matboard with an 8x8 inch piece of heavy duty aluminum foil and rubbed over it to create a relief of their initial. Then they carefully drew patterns and designs, taking care not to rip the foil.

When they were pleased with their designs, they used gel pens to add color.
