Altered Books

Our first venture into the world of Altered Books took place during a special 1-week workshop in January 2015. To prepare for this class, I searched for images of altered books on the Internet and compiled them into a Power Point presentation to show on the first day. As an in-class resource, I purchased this book:

I had a variety of materials in the room (in addition to books that were destined to be discarded from our school's library): X-acto knives, glue, binder clips, markers, magazines, tape, a drill, ribbon, fabric, string, yarn, ribbon, chalks, etc. Students could refer back to the Power Point for ideas, but of course they were urged not to simply "copy" someone else's design. It was a fun week!

One student opted to do a series of drawings to illustrate favorite song lyrics....

One student opted to fold the pages of his book to form a word....

One ambitious student decided to transform the pages of his book into an amazing sculpture project....

This student added a little mystery to her project with a book featuring Sherlock Holmes....

How about a movie theater (complete with seats!) showing a 3-D feature film?
