Nocturnal Medley
Who's that woman staring from the mirror back to me?
She's sleep-deprived with sunken eyes--a frightful sight to see...
I've
Given birth
To a nocturnal creature,
A midnight howler,
Pre-dawn screecher!
Sleep--How sweet!--I do remember that...
B.C.
(Before children!)
Now in nightgowned-splendor roam
Through this dark, once peaceful home.
"Sleeping like a baby"?
What a lie!
Crawling under cribs for pacifiers,
Rocking a child who never tires.
Brain cells die when one becomes a mother!!
Alphabetizing all the states--
Mind-games help keep me awake
As days and nights blend into one another....
Midnight madness takes its toll
For look what I have done...
Composed a new operetta
For an audience
Of one....
Someday you'll have children, Mommy sighs,
As she rocks and rocks
And you cry and cry.
Someday you'll have children, too...
And I hope they're like you
Yes, I do, do, do, do--
Oh no, what is this?
Is it what I think?
How can one so small
Create such a stink?
Someday you'll have children, too...
And I hope they're like you
Just like you
Yes, I do.
Walking and burping, and patting and pacing 'til dawn.
Never thought I'd be so happy to see a night gone....
(instrumental)
Someday you'll have children, too...
And I hope they're like you
Just like you
Yes, I do.
Walking and burping and patting and pacing all night.
Watching the darkness give way to a morning's new light.
Oh, but now you're dry.
And your tummy's fine.
And you're snuggled up
In these arms
Of mine....
Someday you'll have children, too...
And I hope they're like you...
Just like you...
I
love
you....
Who's that woman smiling from the mirror back to me?
On her shoulder rests a tiny head, so peacefully...
No matter if a thousand nights
Give way to fitful dawns;
It can't diminish
What I feel....
When this baby's
In
My
Arms....
