James McComb was born August 8, 1765 in Saintfield, County Down, Ireland. He was the son of Andrew McComb (born about 1740 in Aberdeen, Scotland) and Christiana Bell.

According to McComb researchers, James emigrated from Ireland, departing from the port of London just prior to his 18th birthday. He arrived in the port of New York, NY in July 1783 and took the "Oath of Allegiance" in Philadelphia, PA on July 11, 1783. Pvt. 5, E, shown on postwar roster.

Died October 25, 1846 near Barter Brook, Augusta Co. Virginia. Buried at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Fishersville, VA. Husband of Susanah Henderson McComb.
