2. JOHN CALVIN2 HERRON (ALEXANDER1) was born 1823, and died October 19, 1906. He married ELIZABETH SHEFLER December 27, 1844. She was born 1823, and died Unknown.

Notes for JOHN CALVIN HERRON:

John Calvin and his family appear on the 1850 Nelson County census, but not on the 1860 census. I have no further information about him. According to the 1850 census, however, he and his wife were age 27, putting their birth years at approximately 1823. This conflicts, somewhat, with information another researcher had shared which had 1826 as his birth year. I don't know which is correct, as I have found numerous errors in ages on census records.

3. WILLIS A.2 HERRON (ALEXANDER1) was born September 05, 1831, and died February 28, 1918 in Nelson County, Virginia. He married SARAH E. GENTRY, daughter of DAVID GENTRY and JANE MCCUNE on December 20, 1855. She was born November 22, 1836, and died May 02, 1915 in Nelson County, Virginia.

Notes for WILLIS A. HERRON:

Sorting out the children of Willis A. Herron and Sarah E. Gentry Herron has been nearly impossible! While I've learned more and will attempt to correct some mistakes, I still cannot verify accuracy.

In the 1910 Nelson County census, Willis and Sarah were 78 and 74 years old, respectively. It was stated that they had 10 children and that 7 were still living.

What is confusing to me is the number of names and nicknames that appear in this family (and in others). Marguerette was known as "Maggie," and was born in 1866, according to her grave marker. This is all well and good, except that there was a daughter named Sarah who appeared on the 1880 census who was also born in 1866. I don't know if they were twins or the same person (such as "Sarah Marguerette").

I know, now, that "Mallie" wasn't the "May" that I assumed her to be, and that she married a Rubins.

As time permits, I will attempt to locate marriage licenses for these Herron women and see if I can better figure out just who is who!

OTHER NOTES ABOUT WILLIS A. HERRON:

Willis served in Company A of the 19th Virginia Infantry and was described as follows:

"Herron, Willis A.: Pvt. Co. A. enlisted 2/23/63 at Charlottesville. Present
until admitted to Charlottesville hospital 5/31/63, chronic bronchitis.
Returned to duty 8/27/63. Present until POW Harper's Farm 4/6/65. Prisoner at
City Pt. to Pt. Lookout,Md. 4/14/65. Released from there 6/13/65. Residence
Albermarle County. Dark complexion, black hair, blue eyes, 5'10". Born Nelson
County. Farmer."

According to one Herron researcher, the 19th saw pretty heavy fighting during the Civil War, including Gettysburg, where they were part of Pickett's Division and made the famous charge.
