Game of Hearts
You said, one time, that life is like a game of cards--
You play the hand you're dealt.
You shuffled in my life, again, and brought the greatest love
I'd ever felt.
The stakes were high, but I was a gambler
And although I knew that you were a rambler,
I didn't think that from the very start
You were playing a game of hearts.
You made me think that I was gonna be the queen
You'd always want to hold.
We were dealing with such passion that I thought the love we shared
Would never fold.
But when you thought I wanted a diamond from you
And it wasn't in the cards, from your point of view
Without a word, you thought you'd just depart
From the game of hearts.
You could play the game so well;
Were you bluffing, from the start?
'Cause you couldn't play the hand
Once I gave you my heart.
You never laid your cards on the table;
Your hand I never saw.
I guess I didn't win; but did I lose?
Or is it just another draw?
So I'm calling you now--
Weren't you a gambler, too?
If it was real, I wouldn't have thought it of you
To fold when we just might have drawn a winning card
In the game of hearts.
You could play the game so well;
Were you bluffing, from the start?
'Cause you couldn't play the hand
Once I gave you my heart.
You said, one time that life was like a game of cards--
You play the hand you're dealt.
And now you won't even deal with me
And that's the deepest cut I've ever felt.
But you're still holding my heart,
Even if I can't win
So I'm not gonna let you shuffle out again
I need to know--even though we're now apart--
Was it just a game of hearts?
