Colonel Claudius Crozet (1789-1864) was a decorated artillery officer under Napoleon and a pioneer in the development of railroads in America. He was head of the engineering department at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; a principal founder of the Virginia Military Institute; the chief engineer of Virginia and Louisiana; and a teacher.

Crozet was best known for building the "impossible" Blue Ridge Tunnel at Rockfish Gap, in Afton, Virginia. It was, at the time, the longest tunnel in the world.

Four years in the making, this 90-minute video documentary was originally released in 1997 by R.L. "Bob" Barrett of Crozet, Virginia. Mr. Barrett studied and lectured on the life of Claudius Crozet for over 30 years.

Bob supervised systems assembly and industrial engineering at Stromberg Carlson (Comdial) in Charlottesville, Virginia for sixteen years, and then he taught vocational electricity at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center for fifteen years. He also held teaching positions at the University of Virginia and at Piedmont Virginia Community College.

After his retirement, Bob combined his interests in videography and local history to produce "The Claudius Crozet Story." His efforts were supported by a grant from The Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, and with assistance from the Albemarle County Historical Society.

To introduce a new and growing Crozet population to its town's namesake – and to preserve and honor Mr. Barrett's legacy and research – the documentary was re-released on DVD in 2014.

What Viewers have to say about "The Claudius Crozet Story":

"An excellent production of historical significance, showing the range and depth of a truly outstanding soldier, scholar, educator, and engineer." Col. Keith Gibson, VMI historian

"Dear Bob, I want to thank you for the wonderful video of Claudius Crozet. Your time and patience and persistence show in this work. The music and pictures are outstanding, the history is easy to follow. Everyone who sees it will benefit." Bucky Chisholm, Rivanna Chapter, National Railroad Society

"Bob, this outstanding video depicts Claudius Crozet as an eminently practical man of vision whose foresight and determination assured a classical artery of rail traffic for Virginians beyond the Blue Ridge. This was the first great geographical obstacle to expansion from the Tidewater to the Alleghanies, and ultimately westward." James Morgan, Maj. General, Virginia Military Institute, Dean of Faculty, Emeritus

The original documentary was also reviewed in "Progressive Engineer" magazine and it aired on "Virginia Currents" on PBS in the late 1990s.
