Road to Paradise
I'm standing in a city--I don't even know its name;
When it's one o'clock in the morning
These towns all look the same.
The road I thought led to Paradise
Turned out to be a dead-end street.
With no stars above to show the way,
I'm just staring at my feet.
And I wish I had an answer
I wish I had a key
To unlock the mystery of my life;
Break these chains and set me free.
There's no one here to talk to or to share the road a ways.
There's only me--I'm all alone in this God-forsaken place.
There is no path to follow--just old footsteps in the dirt,
So I stand here shaking with the cold
As the wind cuts through my shirt.
And I wish I had an answer
I wish I had a key
To unlock the mystery of my life;
Break these chains and set me free.
(instrumental)
I smoke the night's last cigarette and wish I had a drink
Then I rake my fingers through my hair
To clear my head to think.
'Cause that old road to Paradise is never what it seems,
So I stand here in this empty town
And count my shattered dreams....
The darkness starts to scare me, so I turn and move away.
The city seems to disappear, and I sense the coming day.
I'm on a road I've never seen, and although it's not too clear,
A sign ahead in the early light reads, "Paradise is near."
I think I've found an answer,
Yes I think I've found a key:
The first step of the journey
Is the one that sets you free.
I think I've found an answer,
Yes I think I've found a key:
The first step of the journey
Is the one that sets you free.
